Exhibition “Livin’ on a tin can and eatin’ outta one”:  Paint, Prose and Poetry by Bruce ‘House’ Milner & Company

This exhibition takes a look at the creative vision of musician, poet and painter, Bruce Milner.  In the main gallery nineteen carved and richly coloured paintings created by Bruce Milner and his family members; wife, Liz Barrett-Milner and her aunt, Barbara Browne, are presented alongside poems by Milner, his sister Jean McVey and noted Canadian poets – John B. Lee and Raymond Knister and songwriter, Fred Eaglesmith. The visitor is invited to read the poems as a painting or view the painting as a poem.

Norfolk Studio Tour Preview Exhibition 

Features the work of thirty-eight Norfolk Studio Tour artists and artisans participating in the 2010 Studio Tour.  Artists’ work includes oil, watercolour, and acrylic paintings, pottery, textiles, metal and glass, sculpture, photography, woodcraft, jewellery from fine art and sculpture to home décor and fashion.  For more information on the Studio Tour, please visit their website at www.norfolkstudiotour.com.

Author David Beasley Launches Two Books 7:00-8:30 p.m.

David Beasley, author of the popular novels Sarah’s Journey and From Bloody Beginnings, will launch two books. Violet’s Flight about the escape from Burma of tens of thousands over the Himalayas to India at the time of the Japanese invasion in 1942. Poets John B. Lee and Glen Sorestad 7:00-9:00 p.m.

This will be an evening of poetry readings with authors John. B Lee of Port Dover and Glen Sorestad of Saskatoon (Sask.). John B. Lee will be reading Sweet Cuba, which he translated from contemporary Cuban poetry.  Glen Sorestad will be reading from the chapbook, Road Apples and from a volume of poetry, What We Miss. Richard Tai Grove of Brighton will give opening remarks about Cuban poetry and Canada Cuba Literary Alliance. Publications will be available for purchase after the reading.

Norfolk Studio Tour Spotlight on George Conklin and Vera Cline-Hayes (Sept 3-26)

Painter George Conklin works depict “intense, physical characteristics” in his landscapes. George says, “I paint atmosphere and my impressions of the feeling of a scene in the hope of making it permanent.” Pen and ink artist Vera Cline-Hayes creates intricate designs using textured papers, fabrics and gemstones to combine a unique blending of balance and symmetry.  All you have to do to participate is go to one of the stores listed below and pick up a SCAVENGER HUNT Sheet! From there, you need to collect ALL 14 signatures of the participating stores (below) then take your fully completed sheet to the DOWNTOWN SIMCOE BIA Office at 50 Peel Street, Simcoe, Ontario and put it in the draw box. Draw will take place Friday, Sept 3rd, 2010.

Rules and Reuglarions for the Back to School Scavenger Hunt:

#1 Participant must be between 5 and 17 years of age and returning to a legitimate educational instirution in the fall of 2010

#2 Sheet must have all 14 signatures (1 from each participating store) to be eligiable for the draw.

#3 Draw must take place on September 3rd and the winner will be contacted via TELEPHONE (a telephone number MUST be provided on the back of the participation sheet)

#4 Prize must be picked up from the Downtown Simcoe BIA Office no later then September 17th, 2010, otherwise a new winner will be drawn.

Brendalee Engelhardt

soroptimist_women_of_excellence_074.jpg  Winner of the Business and Professional Women of Excellence Award was presented to Brendalee Engelhardt for her leadership and consistent commitment to excellence. She leverages her achievements and management skills to facilitate change and creates opportunity in either the profit or not for profit sectors. She demonstrates a respect for and engagement in her community, clients/stakeholders and colleagues.

Brendalee Engelhardt has been a leader in the community with youth, her church, and at the Downtown Simcoe BIA. She is one of the key organizers of the downtown revitalization taskforce and the drive-thru art gallery in the core of Simcoe.

Also we would like to reconize other winners that are members of our BIA.

 

 

 

 

Marcy Michener took home the award for Sports and Recreation for outstanding achievement in the promotion, education and/or involvement in the physical, emotional and/or spiritual health and well being of others or achievement in a sport related field.

Heidi Kussman-Armstrong took home the award for Health and Wellness for outstanding achievement in the promotion, education and/or involvement in the physical, emotional and/or spiritual health and well being of others.
